Janelle, you're so on with this post. People get really excited with social media and think it's so different that strategy is thrown out the door. We all need to remember to approach these new tools. We need to establish business objectives first, then align the proper social media tools and evaluate the progress. Strategy matters in new media!

Jill, I agree with you. It's definitely at tedious process, but the more tenacious you are, the better you'll be in the long run.

Thank you, Erin! And congratulations, on your new position with Fahlgren-Mortine!

Again, I have to agree with you. It felt like nothing ever worked out when I started my career, and now that I've thrown myself into it headfirst, I just keep lucking out. That's honestly my perspective, and I think that's how you have to look at it to make sense of it all. My internship search was pretty terrible at first, but the more and more applications I sent in, it felt like luck shone down.

Ashley and Tony, I completely agree. While most of my friends and family have double-guessed my major of study (especially within the last six months or so), I know that we're definitely at the right place! I feel comfortable that the faculty here will be sure to lead us in the right direction.

Blake, I think you, too, have a valid point. The medium of communication definitely reflects on the audience who needs to be reached, and we certainly haven't seen the end of outdoor advertising/media.

Nick, I really like what you have to say. It's not as much "traditional v. new media," but much more of a convergence of the two. It's all one media. And luckily for you, most of my friends call me "J," so no need to worry about the misspelling :).

L'Shanell, I'm glad you agree! Thank you for reading!

Thank you all, and please continue to visit for more updates :)

I agree! I think traditional media and social can actually complement each other in certain occasions. I do believe some aspects of traditional media will continue to fade over the next decade, but it can definately coexist with new media. Great post!

Jenelle-

Nice post. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the same situation with friends in family.

I tend to think that social media and traditional media are converging. For instance, you can read the Detroit Free Press in print, but they're online, they tweet and interact with their readers, you can bookmark their content.. the list goes on. Isn't that social?

I think social media is providing us a glimpse of what traditional media will look like in a few years. Sure, it's not going to be exactly the same, but I think the important point is that traditional is going social.

See you soon!

I think the two can definitely work together! Traditional outdoor media is a great way to drive traffic to a website (which Ashton proved!). So if a company is able to drive traffic to their company site through traditional media and then convert those visitors to followers on Twitter or Facebook (or other new media site) through contests or giveaways, then I feel traditional has partnered successfully with new media!

I totally agree Janelle -- that's a great way to put it. Journalists and "journalism" in general needs to learn how to better brand and promote themselves.

And if you'll indulge me, I expanded on the topic in this piece I did for mediabistro.com: http://www.mediabistro.com/articles/cache/a9920.asp

It kind of goes along with Tom's point -- you're brand isn't just name, you have to demonstrate substance, and be able to back it up.

Do you want to be Paris Hilton or Zappos?
